Live From Yatate
Today we begin a new comic set in the GearHead universe. This is going to be a nice, straightforward adventure story with no deep meanings or heavy symbolism or postmodern deconstructionism or anything like that. My goal for this project is to work on my pacing, world-building, and general storytelling technique.
I’ll be experimenting with a new format this time around. Each page is being drawn as a series of four strips; each strip will then be posted separately. By doing so I can update more often and still manage to put aside some pages for when the baby arrives. I call this technique “Going Belgian“. The updates will be posted on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.
Before moving on to today’s comic link I’d like to draw your attention to the buttons at the top of the sidebar to your right. These are the bookmark controls. If you don’t plan to check in here every day but want to keep up with the story, you can use these buttons to save your place and then return to it later.
Now, on with the link. I just received the first three issues of the Voids minicomic by Shayna Marchese. Voids is the story of Sara, a young New Yorker who recently lost her job, her apartment, and her boyfriend all in one day. It’s a story about things that are missing, things that are lost, and things that never belonged in the first place.
Shayna is an absolutely brilliant visual storyteller. The events depicted in Voids appear very simple, but each moment is packed with meaning. There’s an economy and clarity in Shayna’s work that I wish I could master in my own. Her illustration is also really good. I particularly like her depictions of real places in New York.
This link will take you to the first page of Voids. Make sure you check out the short story Gramercy Park as well.
