Living In A Fog
At the risk of turning this comic into a video blog, today I’d like to talk about the credit sequences from cartoons. At the Transplant Forum Scott recently asked for some anime recommendations, and I ended up sending him a page and a half of video samples.
I think my all-time favorite ending sequence is the one from “Jungle wa Itsumo Hale Nochu Guu: Deluxe“. Like the training sequence from Stephen Chow’s God of Cookery, this is one of those videos that I find funny no matter how many times I watch it.
It’s full of motion, color, and fun. Brilliant stuff. The first time I saw Hale+Guu, I only caught this ending sequence and had no idea what the hell was going on. After that I desperately needed to see the show again, this time from the beginning. I’ve been hooked since.
I think this sequence works better than the ending of Suzumiya Haruhi. If I knew nothing else about that cartoon, the ending certainly wouldn’t make me want to come back and learn more. Like the Hale+Guu ending this one features the characters dancing to a catchy pop song. Unlike Hale+Guu, this ending has no hook. It doesn’t communicate anything about the series, other than that it features high school students.
As for an opening sequence, my favorite is probably the one from Futurama but since everyone’s already seen it I’ll show you Kenran Butoh Sai instead. It’s got giant robots.
