No Place Like Home
I’ll admit it. I have a weakness for pop music. Honestly, I believe that most punk fans have this same dirty little secret. In public we’re all edgy and accusing each other of selling out, but once we get in private you wouldn’t believe the kind of mass market crap we listen to. And there’s not a damn thing wrong with that.
One of my favorite catchy tune bands is Montreal’s Men Without Hats. Man, they can create songs that get stuck in my head for weeks at a time. I’d guess that most Americans only know this band for “The Safety Dance”, which I’m not going to bother to link to because if you don’t know how that song goes you clearly weren’t alive when G1 Transformers roamed the Earth. Instead, here’s a fan-created video for “Pop Goes the World”, since the original doesn’t seem to be on YouTube.
I’ll admit it- As time went on the Men traded their original synthpop stylings for a rockier, more guitar-based sound. The band broke up after 1991’s album “Sideways”, but reunited for the album “No Hats Beyond This Point” in 2006.
Of course, they didn’t abandon synthpop entirely. When Ivan Doroschuk released his solo album “The Spell” in 1997 he returned to a sound reminiscent of early Men Without Hats. Enjoy “Super Bad Girls” and I’ll see you on Monday.
