Space Pirates
Aileen’s character design was done by Ladene Kosaka, the star portrait artist for the GearHead game. If you’ve played the game you’ll recognize her portraits as the ones that actually look good. I’m extremely pleased to announce that she’s stepping in as guest artist next week. I’ve been a fan of Ladene’s work ever since her brother emailed me a pack of portraits that she created several years ago. She is a fantastic artist, and I feel extremely privileged to have her as part of the team.
Right now, for the Friday music video festival, let’s take a look at some pirate videos. “The Last Saskatchewan Pirate” was originally a song by The Arrogant Worms, but this version is by Captain Tractor. I sometimes sing this song to Sean while I’m feeding him; I don’t know why.
I first played “The Curse of Monkey Island” on a friend’s computer right after it came out. A few years ago I found the Korean version of the game in a bargain bin at Carrefour; imagine my shock when I discovered that they cut the musical number. Fortunately, there’s always YouTube.
Finally, this isn’t a pirate song, but it’s all about rum so that’s close enough. This song originates from St.John’s, was popularized by Great Big Sea, and here’s a band called Three Pints Shy singing it in New York. There’s something about having a group of New Yorkers singing about the “Queen of George Street” that fills my heart with warmth. Or, that might just be the rum.
