Theme Park of Tragedy
Memorial Land is based partly on the P.O.W. memorial/park on Koje Island (yes, that Koje Island). Unlike all the other memorials we’ve visited in Korea, the Kojedo P.O.W. park is positively festive. The historical displays make sure to let you know that this was the bestest P.O.W. camp in all of Korea. There’s a giant tank which children can climb all over and slide down the barrel. It’s definitely worth a visit but it’s nothing like any war memorial you’ve seen before.
The other part of the inspiration is my home island of Newfoundland, where every other thing is a war memorial: parks, government buildings, skating rinks, universities, video stores…
