Mystery Machine
Today I had a bunch of students hanging out in my office talking about stuff. They often drop by to ask me about English, western culture, or strange things they think I should know. I don’t even remember what led up to this but one boy was asking some questions about American history, and as his questions were answered it became apparent that he had some pretty strange misconceptions… First of all he thought that there was still slavery in the US up until around the 1960s. Then, slavery was abolished by the combined efforts of Martin Luther King Jr and president Abraham Lincoln. Tragically, Lincoln was assassinated shortly thereafter while he was out driving in his car.
In my student’s defense, it’s not like he had to learn American history for school, and to a middle schooler the 1960s sound pretty close to a thousand years ago. In the defense of my other students, he was the only one with such an odd version of history.
The proportions are strange in today’s strip. I’ll have to fix that before it goes to print.
