For today’s strip I was alternating between the titles “Remember This” and “Joseph Hewitt is a Pretentious Ass”. In the end I decided to save that second title for a future strip.
In sad news I just found out that Yoshito Usui died. He was the creator of Crayon Shin-Chan, known in Korea as Motmalinun Jjang-Gu. His illustrations look simple and childlike but have a fantastic dynamism which fits well with his twisted sense of humor.
I asked a Japanese friend of mine who the original audience for Shin-Chan was supposed to be. According to her, the comic book was aimed at adults but once the cartoon came out children started watching it too. The introduction of Himawari marks the point at which it stopped being a juvenile cartoon for adults and instead became an adult cartoon for juveniles.
He will be missed.
