Speaking of damage resistance, here’s a question for you: Does anybody know of a half decent, free, party-based fantasy RPG for Linux? I’ve been in the mood for something like ToEE but without reinstalling Windows. Or paying money for it. Or writing it myself.
The trouble with amateur RPGs is that it’s very easy to start a project but far more difficult to end it. If I had a dollar for every incomplete fantasy epic on SourceForge I could hire a team of programmers to finish one of them. Look at GearHead2- it’s been in development for five years and shows no sign of slowing down. Of course I consider that more of a feature than a bug… I use GearHead the same way my father uses his cabin. It’s someplace I can get away from the real world, and I can putter around all I like without worrying that I’ll ever run out of things to improve.

Well, there is Exult is you are willing to “aquire” the data files for Ultima 7. Wine will make most windows rpgs work (I’m playing Baldur’s gate under it at the moment). Games like ToEE and BG take a lot more time to make than your average FPS. If you can find any free ones for Windows, I’d be surprised.

I have Ultima 7, so acquiring the data files will be disappointingly non-larcenous.
I realize how difficult it is to create an RPG from scratch, I’m just surprised by the near-complete absence of playable projects. Maybe for my next vacation from GearHead I’ll take a month and see if I can cobble together a pure retro style hack-n-slash FRPG… like ToEE or BG, but with all the plot and characters removed. Something like Wizardry or The Bard’s Tale, but with interesting combat.

Neverwinter Nights has a Linux client too, actually provided by the developers, if you happen to own that too. If you ever decide to give making an RPG a shot, drop me a line and I’ll lend a hand. God knows I’ve stared at your Free Pascal code long enough that I should be able to pitch in

BTW, your voles need to learn to attack the weak spot for massive damage.
