Vaya Con DiasBora

Did I say I was finished with the ScienceBlogs bruhaha? I was wrong. I’ll probably talk about Sean’s potty training again at some point, too.

As those of you who are interested in science blogging probably know already, Bora Zivkovic has left ScienceBlogs. You can read his farewell notice here, and I suggest that you do. It’s a thought provoking review of the history of science blogging along with some speculation about the future. Not everyone agrees with Bora’s assessment of the situation, of course, but what did you expect? A care bear tea party? I’m reminded of the words of George Bernard Shaw:

The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man.

Several of the bloggers who remain at ScienceBlogs are working to fix some of the issues which led to the exodus. Most of the bloggers who left are now back in their old digs and still blogging. The blogosphere is changing. Change can be a scary thing, especially for those of us who still haven’t quite gotten the hang of RSS readers, but it can also be good.

I’d like to thank Bora and everyone else on the net who blogs about science. I’d also like to thank Ed Yong for the word DiasBora, without which this pun would not have been possible.

Moot point IMHO. Just because someone is staying doesn’t mean that they are trying to “fix” anything and, vice versa, those leaving could be trying to set up alternative solutions that they consider look to be where the future lies. It’s more about what individuals are doing that where their blog is, and what their needs are (different people’s needs will differ).

Grant- You’re absolutely right. This is a complex situation and my summary of it was, if you’ll pardon me for saying so, overly cartoonish. It’s just another reason for everybody to go read Bora’s post instead of this.

GrrlScientist- The feeling is mutual. :) I do my best to keep you and the attack parrots happy.

You are a hilarious little muffin, Joseph.
